This week is Spring Break, so a lot of our usual weekly activities were canceled. So today, even though the high was only in the 40s, the kids and I went to the zoo for the day.
We started with the penguins today. The penguins were in rare form today—racing each other in the water, jumping high, and splashing:
Then we went to the amphibian house. Can you spot the frog hiding in the dirt? I wouldn’t have seen him, but Eagle Eye Makenna did!
You can’t really tell from this picture, but this frog was HUGE! It actually grossed me out a bit. Can you imagine spotting a giant frog hopping around in your backyard?
Hanging out in a cave like an amphibian.
Like I mentioned, it was cold today! So the kiddos were wearing long sleeves, coats, mittens, hats, and then had their hoods up over their hats. They also each had a blanket.
Next we went to my (least) favorite exhibit—the reptile house:
I always thought flamingos were bright pink. These were more of a pastel, but are still super pretty!
We have never gone to the barn to see the farm animals at this zoo. The kids really enjoyed getting to see them!
It’s so exciting to see a bald eagle! It makes me feel all patriotic! : )
The kids always love watching the prairie dogs:
At the Detroit Zoo, you can walk around in the kangaroo pen with them. The kangaroos were all hanging out in a big group today:
One kangaroo came RIGHT UP to Makenna. She was pretty freaked out about it! ; )
I thought it was probably time to eat lunch, so we headed to one of the zoo’s cafeterias. However, we couldn’t find a seat inside because all of those with picnic lunches were at all of the tables. I actually don’t think it’s too fair for all of the tables to be filled by people who aren’t actually eating food from the restaurant! Makenna wasn’t too happy about it either:
She was really looking forward to getting to eat inside in the nice warm restaurant! Unfortunately, we had to eat outside at the picnic tables while people who packed a picnic lunch were sitting inside. Grr.
Max didn’t seem to mind though:
Eventually, Makenna started feeling a little bit better too:
After lunch we went to see the polar bears:
And the seals:
And played on the ice:
Then we finished up by seeing a few more, more common, zoo animals:
It was AWESOME to see a peacock with its feathers spread! So gorgeous!
And we finished up in the Butterfly House:
We spent almost five hours at the zoo today! The kids were super well-behaved and it was a really fun time!
On another note—it’s official! Austin will start his residency at Henry Ford Macomb here in Michigan in June! Three more years in Michigan!
