Well, we just got home from a super fun trip to the Detroit Zoo! We honestly had SO much fun! The kids were super well-behaved and very excited to see all of the animals!
As this is going to be a rather long, picture-filled post, I thought I would go ahead and give it its own post rather than wait for the weekly post this weekend. Just a word of caution—zoo pictures really aren’t that exciting unless it is YOUR trip to the zoo! You just see a lot of random pictures of animals and backs of childrens’ heads… So just be prepared! : )
At the entrance of the zoo. Makenna is SO excited and Max is, well, Max… : )
Our first stop was the Butterfly Garden. Makenna was especially excited to visit the butterfly garden because she has a Fancy Nancy book where Fancy Nancy visits one. : ) It was so fun to see all of the butterflies flying around! There were SO many of them! The zookeeper said that they were all out and flying around because it was such a warm and sunny day. I guess they were just excited for beautiful weather after last weeks cold and rain too! : )
Looking up and around at the butterflies:
You walk out of the butterfly garden, directly into a free-flying bird room. These birds were GORGEOUS!
Back outside, we were off to find more animals!
A vulture (look at that wingspan!):
I’m including several pictures of the kids “watching” during this blog post. I just love their expressions as they look for and view the animals! : )
A camel:
I’m not sure what kind of deer these are, but Makenna said they are “reindeer.” : )
Next we saw the tiger. She stayed hidden in her cave the whole time we were there. I wish she would have come out because she was so pretty! The zookeeper said that she is 8 years old and was born right there at the zoo. I had to laugh when she said that because it made me think of the movie Zookeeper. In that movie, the lion is talking about being “in the wild” and the zookeeper says, “What do you mean the wild?!? You were born right here in the zoo! I bottle fed you!” : )
The monkeys (or baboons, not sure which one) are always a crowd pleaser! They are just so fun to watch!
The gorilla was really hard for the kids to see—he blends right in with the rocks! But he is MASSIVE!
The lions—one is sitting on the rock and another one was lying asleep on the grass.
The rhinos are also just really, really BIG animals!
The zebras:
Next we entered an “Outback Adventure.” We were able to walk right out there with the kangeroos! The kids weren’t as excited about this as I thought they would be. They were just getting a little too hungry and thirsty, I guess (you had to put your food and water away when you went into their area). But I thought it was really cool!
The cute little joey was just hopping around!
Next we saw the prairie dogs. The kids actually really liked these! They were playing around just like little puppies! The zoo had a little tunnel that kids can go in and see the prairie dogs up close and personal. This was a favorite! The kids kept asking if we could go back and see the prairie dogs “one more time.”
By this time we were all hungry and ready for lunch. I had meant to bring a picnic lunch today, but realized our grilled cheese sandwiches yesterday used up most of the bread. So we had to eat lunch at the zoo today! Luckily it wasn’t too horribly expensive (it will count as our eating out for this week, Austin!). : )
Yes that is a hotdog in my daughter’s mouth!
Back to seeing the animals! Our next stop was the Arctic area. Posing with a polar bear:
I loved this area the most! We were able to go under ground and see the seals swimming! The walls were total glass—we were in a giant aquarium! It was so, so cool! Definitely my favorite part of the day! I also loved all of the pictures we took there so I’m including almost all of them, ha ha.
I really did not realize how large seals are!
Loved, loved, loved it! It was also nice and cool in there. : ) So I could have stayed all day! Unfortunately, my batteries in my camera died during the middle of the exhibit (when I looked at the pictures later I found over 60 pictures of a certain little boy… pretty sure he used up all of my battery!). So the rest of the pictures were taken on my phone and the quality isn’t as good!
Right outside were some rocks that the kids had fun climbing on:
Next we saw a polar bear swimming around (if you look closely on the left, you can see him. He blends in with the ice too well!):
Austin, you would be proud of me—I sucked it up and took the kids into the reptile house! Honestly, I am PETRIFIED of basically any and all reptiles. They just really, really gross me out! In fact, in elementary school I refused to stay in the classroom when they brought a snake in to show our class! Hate them! But the kids wanted to see them so I sacrificed and took them in. However, I’m not going to give a commentary with the pictures. I just want to quickly post them and move on! ; )
Next we visited the amphibian house. I’m not going to lie—frogs kind of creep me out too!
Finally we visited the penguins. They are actually pretty fun to watch as the waddle around and move their wings back and forth! Unfortunately, it was a little stinky in there so we didn’t stay as long as the kids would have liked!
And that was the end of our zoo trip!
Posing outside the zoo:
Okay, so Makenna said that her favorite animals were lions and tigers and butterflies and zebras and penguins and about a zillion other animals. Max said his favorite was the snakes. Eww, so not my child! My favorite was definitely the seals. And Austin, Makenna said your favorite was the frogs. So apparently you joined us too—not just in pictures! : )
I’m really excited we got to go to the zoo this morning! It was perfect—we got up and had breakfast and did our chores and got ready and then made it to the zoo when it opened at 10 am. We were able to eat lunch there and stayed until just about 1:30. Then we made it home in time for late naps (the zoo is only 15 minutes from our house). Perfect! I’m excited to go more now that the weather is getting cooler! It’s a great way to spend the day!
