The Little Dancer Girl

Makenna’s birthday is tomorrow!  My baby will be 3 years old!  How crazy is that?!?  She has pretty much received all of her gifts already.  One of her gifts was the earrings (see previous post) and another gift was to take dance lessons!  She loves watching the “dancing girls” (as she calls them), and since her friend was taking classes, we thought it would be fun to enroll Makenna in the short time we have left here in Glendale.  Yesterday was her first class.  It is a ballet/tap combo class for little girls ages 3-5.  They do 30 minutes of ballet and then 30 minutes of tap.  Makenna is not YET three, but because her birthday is so close, they let her sign up anyway.

First of all, you are going to have to excuse the picture quality of these photos.  Yes, I know—they are TERRIBLE!  But parents are not allowed in the room during lessons, so I took all of these pictures through the viewing window in the waiting room. And they are actually pictures of Makenna’s REFLECTION in the mirror!  There were so many parents, I couldn’t really get at a good angle to take pictures.  So I watched Makenna through the viewing window in a mirror and snapped pictures of her that way.  So yes, these are very bad pictures, but they are the best I have!

At the beginning of class, you could tell that Makenna was TOTALLY lost!  I don’t think she really knew what a class would be like or what she was supposed to do.  She stood very still and quietly and just starred at everyone.  As a mom, your heart breaks when your baby looks so uncomfortable and lost like she did! (The little girl in pink is Makenna’s best friend Natalie.)

Do you see the scared look on her face?  Poor baby! And then even after a few minutes of class, she was still lost.  She wasn’t following the teacher or the other children, she was just looking around like, “What in the world should I be doing?!?”  It made me so sad for her!

Finally a teacher came and told her specifically what to do (although even then she was pretty darn lost!)

Finally she seemed to get more into it.  She was still behind the other children and not really catching up with the class, but at least she was trying!

We have got to practice some stretches with that kid!  She is SO not flexible!  I think this class will really help her with that!

They did some individual dancing across the room.  I couldn’t get up close enough to the window to take better pictures, but it was really cute and she seemed to be having fun!

After thirty minutes of ballet, it was time to change into their tap shoes.  All of the little girls came running into the waiting room to change their shoes… except for Makenna.  I went in the room and she was just sitting there.  She looked at me sadly and said, “I need tap shoes on, not ballet shoes.”  Oh baby girl!  Your mommy will always take care of you!  If I can help it, you will ALWAYS have what you need! I don’t know if she thought she wouldn’t get tap shoes like the other kids or what, but once again she was scared and lost. : (

I don’t know if you can tell in this picture or not, but Makenna and Natalie were holding hands.  : )  Makenna actually got in trouble a few times for talking to Natalie too much.  She may not get to not stand by her friend in future classes! (I think this class will also help her learn to follow directions and rules better!)

Anyway, so after class it seemed that Makenna HAD had fun.  Hopefully she will feel a little more comfortable and at ease in future classes.  I think after she realizes that she is basically just following the teacher, she will be able to do the class better and have more fun!  In any class, she loves being a “ballerina dancer girl.” : )
