Can you believe we have already been in Michigan for six weeks?!? Because I can’t! It still feels like we only just barely moved here! But Austin started his SECOND month this week, so I guess I should be believing it! He is still at his core site, but while last month he was on internal medicine, this month he finally started podiatry again. He seems to be liking it a lot. I know that he likes the people he works with so that is a big plus! He is getting home later this month, but it still isn’t too bad so I shouldn’t complain.
The kids and I had another fun and busy week this week! But first, I took these two pictures this week. This is a typical morning at our house. After breakfast, I start trying to get my chores done for the day—make the beds, start the laundry, empty the dishwasher, get dinner prepped, clean, etc. While I’m busy working, this is usually Makenna:
Blanket, teddy bear, still in PJs, watching TV. Honestly, she would sit there all day if I didn’t make her turn off the TV at 9 every morning. Anyway, the NEXT picture is what really cracks me up. While Makenna tries to watch TV, Max tries his best to get her attention and is basically an annoying 2 year old little brother:
He has a flashlight airplane that he got for his birthday and he is flashing it in her face trying to get her attention. And she is TOTALLY ignoring him. Oh those two funny kids! : ) Anyway, on to our week.
Monday: I blogged about this day earlier this week. It was the 4th of July so we went to a pancake breakfast at the church, wondered around an outlet mall, and went to a BBQ that night.
Tuesday: Beach Day! That is SUCH a stressful day, honestly! It is stressful because I have to get together all of the beach stuff as well as picnic stuff as well as get the kids dressed in swim stuff and out the door at 10 to make it by 10:30. It is also stressful to try to carry all of that stuff plus drag two kids through the parking lot to the beach. And then there is the setting up, watching kids to make sure they don’t drown (which Max basically did on Tuesday. I was standing near him, talking of course, and all of a sudden he couldn’t stand up straight and was sucking water in. Luckily I was fairly close to him and could grab him. But there were moms standing all around and no one even noticed that he couldn’t stand up straight or catch his breath. I read an article this week that said that most kids drown with adults standing right there because they don’t notice that that is what is happening, so SO scary!) or run away, keep them out of the mud, etc. And Max wants to be right there where Makenna is. Tuesday she was out a little deeper playing with some friends and Max tried to follow. He is like a foot and a half shorter than her! She wasn’t very deep, but it was over HIS head. And yet he tries to follow every time and he cries when I won’t let him go out that far. And Makenna cries when I try to get her to come up closer to the beach to play with Max… So water time is fight time! Anyway, then we have the picnic to try to do and try to keep Miss Priss Makenna from freaking out when sand gets in her food. And then there is the packing it all back up, washing sand off the kids (and trying to keep them out of the sand while I wash the other kid off!), and trying to get them PLUS all of our stuff back in the car. And by this point, either one or both of the kids are crying because it is already past nap time. So I usually drive home to the sound of tears. Whew! Stressful! But, I LOVE it! I love the feel of the sun and the wind. I love seeing the kids giggle as they splash in the water or play in the sand. I love getting the chance to talk to other moms from the ward. I even love the red on my skin that night and the next day (although my kids are still just as white as white can be!). Totally worth all of the stress to spend a day at the beach! I just don’t think I could do it multiple times a week! : )
Wednesday: Wednesday we went to a pot luck/ water party at a member of the MOMS Club’s house. Okay, I’m in a quandary over the MOMS Club. I like that it gives us more things to do during the week. And the other moms are pretty friendly and it gives me more adult interaction. I also like that the kids usually have fun activities to do. But some of the other kids there are HORRIBLE! Moms spend the whole time yelling at the kids and the kids spend the whole time ignoring their moms. I get enough of that with my own kids, do I really need to listen to it for two hours from other moms and kids?!? Not only that, at our playgroup on Wednesday, a couple of the kids were just plain out MEAN. For instance, Makenna was playing with a bucket in a little swimmng pool. A kid came and tried to pull the bucket out of her hands, but she wasn’t letting go! So he pulled the bucket so hard he pulled her OUT of the pool! She still didn’t let go, so he started dragging her across the yard, trying to get her to let go of this bucket! At this point I stepped in, stopped him, and said, “No! She was playing with that and you are hurting her! Stop!” To which he said, “No!” and gave the bucket a final yank to jerk it out of her hands and went off to play. Umm?!? It is things like that that make me not want to go to those activities anymore. And this kid’s mom is like, “We need to let the kids handle this by themselves.” Not when they are HURTING other kids! Anyway, so I’m not sure if we are going to continue to go to MOMS Club… I don’t need my kids to pick up even more bad habits!
But for the most part (when they were just playing with each other), the kids had a fun time. We had lunch and then they got to play with different water toys. It was hot but not TOO hot, so it was perfect for water play.
They really liked this water table and played with it for a good, long while:
Max found a little lawn mower and played with it for a while-- until a kid came and took it from him that is. Grr! /: (
They also enjoyed going down a slide into a little pool.
Makenna is so protective of Max! She would see that some other kids weren’t letting him take turns so she would say, “Come on, Max! You can go in front of me!” Those two absolutely adore each other! It is very sweet!
So I overheard Makenna talking to this little girl:
She met this little girl the week we moved in here at the library. So when she sees her on Tuesday, she said, “Hi, Emily!” and Emily said, “How do you know my name? What is your name?” And Makenna said, “Don’t you remember me, Emily? From the library? It’s Makenna!” Ha ha, she remembers EVERYONE! Even this little girl that she had only met for a hour at the library weeks ago! I wish I was that good at names!
Thursday: My eyes were really bothering me, so I had to take my contacts out and wear my glasses. Because we were super cheap, I bought glasses that didn’t have glare protection and I can’t wear them outside. So we just stayed at home all day on Thursday. But it gave me some time to catch up on chores and the kids some time to play at home, so it was a needed break.
Friday: We were busy on Friday! In the morning we headed to the park with friends from the ward. There was a bunch of kids from a summer program there so the park was SO crowded! And those kids were all about 9 or 10 and Makenna said they “scared her” so we only stayed about an hour and a half. But it was still fun. Most of the kids from the ward that day were either much older or younger than my kids. But some sweet girls (7 and 8 year olds) took Makenna under their wings and let her play with them. I love it when big kids are so nice to little kids! Makenna, especially, looks and acts very grown up. But she is still just a little girl! : )
After the park, we tried naps but the kids just didn’t sleep. We had to get up anyway because Max finally had his 2 year check up (We finally have the kids’ insurance settled. Just waiting for ours and our food stamps. We need food, government people! So hurry it up!). The doctor said Max was perfectly healthy and good… until he checked his iron levels. And Max is anemic! So he has to start taking iron meds! He is my meat and veggies eater, so this was pretty crazy to me! But hopefully the meds work out.
Later on, we brought dinner to a mom in the MOMS Club who just had a baby. By that point, it was 6 pm and Austin was just barely getting off of work and I hadn’t had time to make my own family dinner, so we met for dinner at Red Robin and then headed straight home for bed time. So it was definitely a busy day!
Saturday: Yesterday I finally took Max to Wal-Mart to get his 2 year pictures made. So expect to see those soon, Grandma Becky! : ) I only bought the $7.99 package, but it is still pictures, ha ha. Austin had a teleconference all morning, so he stayed home and watched Makenna while Max and I did pictures and ran a few errands. That afternoon, we changed the kids’ bedrooms. They have been sharing a room, but they just weren’t sleeping at nap time or bed time and it was a huge fight every day and night. So I finally said, “No More!” and split them back up. It is a bummer to lose our playroom, but hopefully they will sleep better now! Makenna was actually pretty excited to have her own room again.
